Spain earns mixed results in online gambling revenue for Q3
Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), Spain’s regulatory body, announced licensed online gambling operators earned €191.2m ($235m) in revenue for the period of three months that ended on 30 September. Compared to the same period in 2019, this represented growth of nearly 3%, but it’s also an almost 6% drop from revenue recorded in Q2 2020.
Sports betting dropped by 15% year-on-year, bringing in €85.2m. Live betting brought in €52.6m, a 9% decline from 2019, and pre-match betting earned €31.5m, a 21% drop.
Online casinos reported €83.9m in revenue, a 26% year-on-year increase. Slots revenue was €49.8m, live roulette earned €22.4m and online poker earned €23m. Plus, cash games revenue was €6.5m and bingo suffered a 23% year-on-year drop to €4m.
Spain is set to get a new regulatory body to monitor gambling operations, the Ministry of Consumption and Gambling. It’s currently unclear if it will work together with DGOJ or replace it, but the new regulatory body will likely be led by Consumer Affairs Minister Alberto Garzón.
